Ryan Pappe, Head Brewer
Pyramid IPL is an interpretation of India Pale Lager style, blending the characteristics of a Northwest IPA and a Czech Pilsener. The grain bill is consistent with that of an IPA, with caramel malts for color and flavor, and enough malt to reach 6.0% ABV. A few popular Northwest hops, Nugget and Chinook, are utilized in the kettle for bitterness and flavor, and the beer is then heavily dry-hopped during post-fermentation to maximize hop aroma. Amarillo and Centennial hops used at this stage accentuate the citrus and resiny character common in Northwest IPAs, as well as Sterling hops, which provide spicy and grassy notes familiar to classic Czech Pilseners.
When poured, Pyramid IPL has a bright golden-copper hue, with a cream-colored head that slowly ebbs leaving a nice lacing behind. The aroma is of sweet malt, spicy hops and citrus. The first sip introduces citrusy, resiny and spicy hops with subtle caramel malt sweetness. Pyramid IPL is light-bodied and refreshing with a crisp and clean finish, which is characteristic of lagers. There is a hint of sweetness and a lingering bitterness more reminiscent of a Pilsener than an IPA, which is present, but not overpowering. This beer has an assertive hop character that should appeal to IPA drinkers, but with a more balanced bitterness and smoother taste experience that harkens back to the classic Czech Pilseners.
